Face oils have sky-rocketed in popularity in 2020 and for good reason. Providing a plethora of skin goodness, focusing on all the benefits we all seek on our skincare journey. Glow? Check. Hydration? Check. Baby like softness? Check-check. But with every new trend that comes to light, comes the questions? Is it recommended for oily skin? Will it make me break out? Do I really need to add another product to my routine? Yes babe, you do! And here is why.
Truth is- it will absolutely change your life ( maybe a little dramatic), but it will definitely change your skin. Your skin will look and feel better almost instantly. You will probably need less makeup, (win!) and you will probably need fewer skin-care items altogether.
Here's a little background for you- face oils have been used by indigenous people all over the world in various forms for over hundreds of years; and lets be honest, nothing lasts that long unless it works. Maybe thats why gua sha's have been around for centuries too- shameless plug! In more recent years however, make-up artists, who want their clients skin looking glowy quickly, will usually turn to a face oil for instant va-va-voom. From industry secrets, word has quickly spread and is now becoming a cult favourite. What are the benefits of incorporating a face oil you ask? We have the answers for you.
1. Results are instant!
No matter your skin type, you will see serious benefits right away. Mainstream moisturisers, which usually combine waxes with water and oils, seal moisture in the skin with the wax. But they can also seal out some of the oil and water, not to mention the treatment benefits included in the formula. However with facial oils, it all sinks right in. And most oils are already naturally infused with ingredients like antioxidants, polyphenols, and omega fatty acids, a.k.a all the skin goodness we need.
2. They have multiple uses
Whilst you can use your face oil for effective moisturise and added hydration, it is also used for make-up touch ups by patting oil on the skin to revive the make-up rather than caking more on top. Not sold yet? It can also act as a make-up remove, frizzy-hair fighter, lip balm, cuticle oil and an eye-cream.
Face oils are recommended for those that incorporate retinols or other intense or drying products like benzoyl peroxide. Face oils return moisture and life into your skin, whilst smoothing lines in the process.
3. They feel AHH-mazing!
Oils have a naturally gorgeous, instantly skin-comforting texture, smooth to touch and got us feeling baby-skin like. Because most oils contain natural ingredients and aren't aggressive like other products in our beauty routine, the finished feel is everything you would expect and more in an oil.
Most face oils contain ingredients such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, argan oil, certain flower extracts, essential oils and are usually free from parabens, paraffins and synthetic fragrance.
Like any skin-care product, oils are not for everyone. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth a try. Still, there are some general things to keep in mind when looking for an oil based on your skin type.
If you have dry-skin: Dry skin is most likely to reap the rewards from using a face oil. Dry skin often results from the loss or disruption of its barrier function, which could be a product of over-cleansing, over-exfoliating or just not naturally producing enough oils, so the application of oils, acting as an occlusive agent aids in the prevention of water loss.
If you have acne-prone or oily skin: There is a debate as to whether face oils are recommended for these skin-types. Dermatologist Josh Zeichner suggests choosing with care. Certain oils, like tea tree oil, can help reduce inflammation and acne. However there may be more effective products targeted at treating acne such as salicylic acid and retinoids. It generally depends on the individual skin type and is on a case by case basis.
